Jamieson House

JAMIESON HOUSE BED AND BREAKFAST

Reflect, recharge, romance.

Come visit us for some peace and quiet in a lovely setting away from the stresses of your everyday. Check in and hole up in one of our spacious rooms right out of an old movie. Crash in posh surroundings while you enjoy the activities of a traveler friendly vacation area. Come for the getaway or the interaction or the privacy. Enjoy comfy queen or king beds, luxurious private baths with whirlpool tubs, great food in the morning prepared and presented by people who love to cook, and enough modern conveniences to keep you in touch. Innkeepers Ned and Kathleen O’Reilly know how to pamper singles, couples, and families in an elegant, yet friendly way.

Jamieson House stands on an acre of garden land in the small town of Poynette, Wisconsin. We’re a bed and breakfast and event center. Book a room, stay the night, and enjoy a full sit-down breakfast in the morning. If you’ve got something larger in mind, we can host your meeting, reception, party, or celebration in one or more of our generous common rooms.

We’re in the heart of Wisconsin's playground and Aldo Leopold’s Sand Country. For outdoor enthusiasts, the House is only six miles from Lake Wisconsin with its swimming, boating, and fishing. The nearby MacKenzie Environmental Center affords leisurely self-guided walks through several Wisconsin ecosystems and viewing of wild animals. Rowan Creek, one of the state's best trout streams, runs right through town and is also surrounded by an extensive, wooded hiking trail. Canoeing, tubing, boating, horseback riding, golf, fishing, hunting, and bicycling are all readily accessible. You can downhill or cross country ski at Cascade or Devils Head during the winter. The Snow Season also brings out carriage rides and sleigh rides, sledding and tobogganing.

Wisconsin Dells and Baraboo, with its Circus World Museum and the International Crane Foundation, and many museums, water parks, and tourist attractions, are a relaxing drive away. And don’t miss the bluff hikes and swimming at Devil’s Lake State Park. Madison, the state capitol, is only a 25 mile drive with art galleries, museums, and specialty shops. Visit the Wollersheim Winery in Prairie du Sac, where you can also see eagles along the river, poke through the flea markets and antique stores located in many of the surrounding towns, cross the Wisconsin River on the Merrimac ferry, or explore the nearby Amish community with its many shops. Just a little further west is Mazo Beach, known throughout the area for its idyllic locale. Head northeast to visit Horicon Marsh bird and animal sanctuary. Many farms in the area offer apples, berries, and fresh vegetables for sale, or you can visit their booths at one of the many area farmer’s markets. For gaming action, a short drive will take you to the tables at Ho Chunk or Dejope Casinos. In July 2007, the annual Harley Davidson Motorcycle Ride for Muscular Dystrophy came through Poynette, and Jamieson House joined in the festivities.

As for dining, you can choose from taverns and supper clubs both casual and more formal, as well as ethnic dining experiences in surrounding towns or down in the teeming Madison scene. You’ll also find community and professional theatre in the area.

Built in 1878, the former home of entrepreneur Hugh Jamieson is characterized by its yellow creamery brick facade and Victorian décor, including pocket doors and 11-foot ceilings. Two of our six guestrooms are in the old yellow brick school house at the back of the property, which was moved to the property in the 1970s from nearby Leeds, enhancing the feeling of stepping back in time. The same folks who did that work also hand-laid the Portage brick cobblestone parking lot.

Our guest rooms are large and luxurious, carpeted or featuring hardwood floors, equipped with private bathrooms and spacious whirlpool tubs, and include in-room coffee, cable TV/VCRs, and CD players. DVD players available on request.

We have six guest rooms: The Jamieson Suite, The Maid’s Chambers, The Hudson Suite and the Grant Suite have double wide whirlpool tubs, while Ellie’s Room and Lucy’s Chambers feature standard size whirlpools. Lucy’s, Hudson, and Grant have fireplaces, and all have private baths.

Most breakfasts are served in the well-appointed Formal Dining Room, with its long, large, wooden table imported from Germany, and high-backed medieval style chairs.

Our Living Room is furnished with classic chairs, settees, and small couches under an exquisite painted border. Our 32” television with VCR/DVD player sits at one end, opposite a beautiful bay window.

Another large, long, wooden table takes up a good deal of what was once the only Bank in Poynette. These days it works best for longer meetings, for board and card game play, or for craft weekends.

As for our policies, Jamieson House is a non-smoking building. Smokers are welcome to light up on the porch or at one of the courtyard café tables. We permit visits by well-behaved furry creatures accompanied by human guests, as long as we know ahead of time. We’re a family, so we’re kid friendly. Several of our rooms have extra beds for this express purpose.

We offer a full breakfast, and readily cater to vegetarian, vegan, diabetic, dairy-free, or gluten-free diets. We’ve got both caffienated and non-caffienated coffees and teas available, too.

Our Romance package includes roses and champagne plus a custom music mix and a homemade dessert. With both of these we also offer breakfast in the room. Romantic? Absolutely. Sexy? We set that atmosphere, the sex is up to you. We also host small weddings and you can stay and have the reception right here.

We run many seasonal specials Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall, offering discounts during fall colors, skiing, snowmobiling, and spring break seasons. Always check our website or call us to see what’s available during your stay. The House is a great place for a quilting or scrapbooking retreat, book club getaway, a girlfriend weekend, or a spiritual event. It’s great for your office Christmas party, too.

We’re affiliated not only with the WBBA, but with ILoveInns, Madison Inns, and many other lodging sites, including Purple Roofs, the gay and lesbian lodging resource.
